Translations:
| bucatini | little pierced ones | caserecci | little home–made ones |
| cavatappi | corkscrews | chitarra | guitars |
| conchiglie | seashells | farfalle | butterflies (shaped like bow–ties) |
| fusilli | little spindles | gigli | lilies |
| linguine | little tongues | lumache | snails |
| orecchiette | little ears | penne | pens or quills |
| rigati, rigatoni | ridged | strozzapreti | priest chokers |
| vermicelli | little worms |
There are several explanations as to how strozzapreti got their name. The one I like best is that their texture is so good that the priest (known in popular imagination as a hearty eater) would choke on them.
For other explanations, see Three Monkeys Online (no relation).
