The Gleneagles Hotel is near the town of Auchterarder, in the Scottish council district of Perth and Kinross – approximately 30 miles (50 kilometres) north–west of Edinburgh. Originally commissioned by the Caledonian Railway, it opened in 1924 and was redeveloped for the 2014 Ryder Cup.
The Gleneagles Golf Academy opened in 1994, by which time the hotel already boasted three tournament–standard golf courses in its grounds. The newest of these, on which the 2014 Ryder Cup was played, was designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1993.
As well as the Ryder Cup, Gleneagles has hosted tournaments including the Scottish Open, the Women's Open, and the Solheim Cup. But it has never hosted the (men's) Open Championship.
